Project Abstract

  • The purpose of this project was to take an in-depth look at the advantages and disadvantages between different mixing strategies that music creators have access to in the modern day. The 21st century has seen vast changes to the way that music is produced mixed and mastered thanks to the advancement of technology. Dance music has seen the most success from home recording; artists such as Deadmau5, Avicii and Disclosure who have all had mainstream success that stem from basic digital production in their early careers.

  •

  • This is an interesting field of study as it questions whether the differences are obvious or if the differences are so small that it could be argued that for this type of music has no need for expensive analogue equipment and facilities. While on a more artistic level the project looks at which medium will allow for the fastest most efficient and highest quality mix. A track was been made to test these parameters; one mix was done using only a host based computer system, a second mix was made in an acoustically treated studio on an analogue-mixing desk.

  •

  • A third mix will also be produced in which both strategies are combined in a manner, which more closely reflects actual industry workflows. The computer mix and the Analogue desk mixing strategies have been reviewed and evaluated. The results produced three successful mixes that allowed for a objective conclusion to be drawn. The conclusion being that both strategies have a place and future within music production, however while not as engaging or fulfilling to use, analogue is slowly becoming a privilege for the reasons covered in this report. Lastly the project was evaluated in terms of strengths and weaknesses, this includes technical issues, poor decisions, time management and how the project would have been different if repeated.
